I'm scared of Smart Devices

Do not buy any "Internet of Things / Cloud / Smart" device that relies on an outside server. It is okay to have things networked at home, but not okay to have them completely reliant on phoning-home to some corporation.

When you buy a product, it should be something you control in every sense of the word and not something that controls you or fights with you because the corporation that made it has a very different idea as to how it should be used. 

People should stop allowing their less informed relatives purchase "Smart devices" with completely restrictive terms and a reliance on phoning-home-to-the-corporation. There are plenty of alternative options that do not have these same "phone home corporation" drawbacks, but they have a lesser marketing budget because they don't make money hand over fist by selling your data in secret.
