Linux transition from Older Pc to Newer One

When I bought a new laptop, the first thing i did was to figure out installing linux. I thought it was similar to installing as on older systems. Earlier I had one of 2008's Desktop PC with Intel Dual Core Processor. But with latest PC's that are coming into market (x64 architecture), its different.

The laptop that I received had Windows 8 pre-installed on it. All I had to do was dual boot Linux along with Windows. I had created partitions prior installing and was confused as to why the linux installation was asking for one extra partition. (Not ./(root) or swap but the one with Reserved Bios Boot Area) this was something new which i encountered for the first time. Also after installing, i had to manually add the grub boot loader to the Boot Sequence using EasyBCD. Otherwise you will have to manually change the boot order, boot into hard drive to get linux started.

It took substantial amount of time & energy to research about everything and finally i was able to do it correctly on my 2nd go. My advice to you: Research about your system drivers on the Web or on Linux-drivers.org before installing any linux distro.
