There are places that feel like a travel destination, and then there are places that feel like a deep, exhaled breath. My recent trip to the Roerich Estate in Naggar, tucked away in the serene hills near Manali, was undoubtedly the latter.
Nicholas Roerich, the famed Russian painter, philosopher, and explorer, didn’t just live in the Himalayas he translated them into color. Walking through his former residence, you aren’t just looking at a historical site; you are standing in the very space where the "Master of the Mountains" captured the ethereal light of the peaks.
Why You Should Make the Detour
If you find yourself in the Manali region, it is easy to get caught up in the usual tourist circuit. But I highly recommend taking the winding path up to Naggar. Whether you are an art enthusiast, a lover of history, or someone who just needs a break from the noise of the city, the Roerich Estate serves as a powerful reminder of the beauty that happens when we slow down to truly look at our surroundings.
As I sat there, looking out toward the snow-dusted ridges that Roerich painted so obsessively, I was reminded that our journeys both physical and personal, are best measured by the moments of stillness they afford us.
