I’m Raghu.

For the last few years I’ve been writing over at kanthalaraghu.blogspot.com, mostly about Linux, Android, open source, and whatever AI nonsense the industry was peddling that week. Posts on Ubuntu’s AI roadmap, Samsung beta releases, why KillerPDF deserves more love, the occasional rant about Oracle pretending to be a tech company. That blog isn’t going anywhere. But it has started to feel a bit like a museum; neat shelves, labelled categories, everything in its place.

Substack is going to be the messier room. The one with the half-finished thoughts on the desk and a coffee ring on the notebook.

Here’s roughly what you’ll get:

Tech, still. Linux, open source, AI, the things I actually use. Less “review”, more “here’s what I noticed and why it matters”.

Ramblings. Stuff that doesn’t fit a category — adulthood, work, the weird shape of the news cycle, whatever’s been rattling around at 11pm.

Rants. When something deserves one. I’ll try to keep them earned.

No schedule promises. No “10x your productivity” threads. No AI-generated listicles dressed up as insight. Just me, writing the way I’d talk to you over chai if we both had the time.

If that sounds like your kind of thing, hit subscribe. If not, no hard feelings — the blog’s still there, and the RSS feed still works.

See you in the next one.

Thanks for reading Kanthala’s Substack! As children, we view adulthood as a destination where life suddenly clicks into place. We assume we will wake up one day with total self-assurance, clear desires, and an answer for every crisis.

In reality, maturity reveals that almost everyone is improvising. People are figuring life out in real time projecting composure while feeling completely underwater, making major choices with limited data, and faking confidence because they assume everyone else has it figured out. Yet, this doesn't result in total collapse; instead, it creates a quiet, resilient momentum.

The core truth: Real confidence doesn't come from knowing everything. It comes from accepting that nobody else does either.

This perspective isn't meant to breed cynicism; it is a tool for liberation. When you realize that stability is dynamic rather than static, you drop the exhausting burden of needing total clarity before you take action. The people who inspire us aren't fearless they are simply agile. They relocate without guarantees, accept daunting roles, navigate evolving relationships, and offer advice they are still trying to master themselves. Life progresses because people continue to show up with whatever resources and doubts they have at the moment.

If you delay your life until you feel 100% certain, you will be waiting indefinitely. True confidence coexists with doubt; it is the capacity to move forward even when the path isn't perfectly lit. It means prioritizing progress over perfection, leaning into curiosity rather than fear, and choosing honesty over a false sense of control. Dropping the facade of total knowledge makes room for genuine growth and deep connections. The world doesn't require your flawless performance it just requires your willingness to take the next step.

Practical Shifts for Daily Life

To begin practicing this mindset today, focus on these manageable habits:

Make peace with imperfect choices: Set a hard deadline, gather the best data available, and commit to a path. Action provides far better data than endless deliberation.

Normalize the unknown: Speak honestly about your uncertainties with people you trust. It dismantles isolation and opens the door to invaluable perspectives.

Establish a baseline routine: Build grounding habits like consistent sleep, movement, and digital boundaries. View them as anchors for your well-being, not as guarantees of a problem-free life.

Treat setbacks as data points: When a plan falls through, focus on the lesson rather than internalizing it as a personal flaw. Pivot quickly from "I failed" to "Here is what I will adjust."

Lean into vulnerability: Be transparent about your aspirations and hesitance. It deepens bonds and invites the exact support you need.

View maturity as a process, not a finish line: Appreciate the small, daily shifts instead of waiting for a mythical moment when you will finally feel "fully baked."

Embracing the idea that adulthood is about managing questions rather than hoarding answers is incredibly freeing. It validates why you can feel completely unsure of yourself and still act with deep purpose. Built on Android 17, the new beta feels like a clear signal that Samsung is moving faster this cycle. For anyone who remembers the slower rollout of One UI 7, this is a welcome change.

At first glance, One UI 9 does not look like a massive redesign. Instead, it focuses on refinement, polish, and smoother day-to-day use. That said, there are still plenty of visible changes once you spend some time with it.

Cleaner Design and Subtle Visual Changes

One of the first things users will notice is the cleaner setup process. Samsung has made the initial experience feel more streamlined, and Galaxy AI now appears prominently during setup, which shows how important Samsung considers its AI features.

Once inside the system, the interface feels more polished overall. There is more blur and translucency across different areas, including the passcode screen, quick settings, the Finder, and even the app drawer search bar. These touches give One UI 9 a softer, more modern look that feels closer to stock Android 17 on Pixel devices.

There are also some helpful privacy cues. For example, when an app accesses your location in the background, a blue dot appears in the top-right corner and in the notification panel, making it easier to keep track of what is happening behind the scenes.

Settings and System Improvements

Samsung has also cleaned up several parts of the Settings app. The Samsung account page now looks more organized, and new sections for rewards and subscriptions help users keep track of services like Samsung Care and Galaxy Store purchases.

In several areas, Samsung has removed some of the extra explanations that used to appear beneath settings and submenus. This makes the interface look cleaner, although it may also feel a little less informative in places. On the other hand, Modes and Routines now appears more structured, with clearer categories and better explanations.

Digital Wellbeing and parental controls have been separated into distinct sections as well. This includes more practical controls, such as Play Store filters that can prevent children from downloading age-restricted apps.

Quick Settings Gets a Major Refresh

Quick settings is one of the biggest highlights of the update. Samsung has already improved this area in One UI 8.5, but One UI 9 takes it further.

The brightness and volume sliders are now thicker, and the border styling has been removed. Some people may prefer the old look, but the new design does make the panel feel cleaner. Sound mode and dark mode are also separate now, which gives users more flexibility in arranging the layout.

Another useful addition is the ability to resize the media player. You can now make it much smaller or expand it into a larger card depending on your preference. Samsung has also renamed several options, such as changing “Take screenshot” to “Screen capture,” while power-saving, wireless power sharing, and performance controls have been grouped under a new battery and performance section.

Smoother Animations and Better Motion

One of the best parts of One UI 9 is how much smoother it feels in motion. Samsung has improved several animations across the system, and while the changes are not always obvious at full speed, they become clearer when you pay attention.

Opening widgets, using search, and expanding elements like the settings search bar all feel more fluid. Folder-opening animations have also been refined. App open and close speeds are roughly the same as One UI 8.5, but the overall experience feels more polished and less abrupt.

These are the kinds of changes that do not always stand out in screenshots, but they make a big difference in everyday use.

New Features Across Samsung Apps

Samsung has also added some genuinely useful features in its own apps.

In Game Booster, users can now adjust more settings directly from the game overlay, including bypass charging, screenshot format, and even screen resolution. That makes it much easier to change performance-related options without leaving the game.

The Notes app now includes a new tape-style feature that can be used to cover up sensitive information before sharing a note. It can be customized with different colors, thickness levels, and patterns, making it both practical and visually flexible.

Accessibility also gets a boost with features like Text Spotlight, which enlarges selected text instantly. Samsung has also introduced options to replace swipe actions with a single tap for alarms, calls, and alerts, which could be especially helpful for users who prefer simpler interactions.

Hidden Changes in Native Apps

A lot of the smaller updates are tucked away inside Samsung’s native apps.

The Phone app now formats numbers more neatly by automatically inserting a space after five digits. During calls, it can also show recent call details from the same contact in a small popup.

In Contacts, there is now a shortcut to create a profile card using Creative Studio directly from the edit screen. Gallery has received small design tweaks too, including a colorless Studio icon and a smaller screenshot preview view that opens before full-screen display.

The Files app has also been reorganized. Some categories have changed again, and the downloads category is no longer shown the same way. The storage management page now focuses on essentials, while search settings include a new option to show or hide suggestions.

Network and Labs Features

Samsung has added a few useful tools in Labs and connectivity settings as well.

One of the standout additions is network restriction, which allows users to block specific apps from using Wi-Fi. That means you could, for example, prevent an app like Instagram from loading during work hours while still allowing it to open normally. You can also set a downtime, after which access resumes automatically.

Another useful Labs feature lets users hide split-screen app handles, creating a cleaner multitasking view. It is a small change, but one that improves the overall look of the interface.

What’s Missing So Far

Not every feature makes it into the beta, and a few things users were hoping for are still absent. Native app lock is still missing, and there is no network speed indicator in the status bar yet.

Some features have also been removed or moved elsewhere. The option to wake Bixby while media is playing is gone, Finder search customization has been moved into settings, and some camera options now live inside Camera Assistant.

Secure Folder has remained mostly unchanged, although it now includes more auto-lock timing options. On the downside, some features from earlier leaks, like the new warranty and care app, were not visible in this beta.

Final Thoughts

Overall, One UI 9 feels less like a dramatic redesign and more like a thoughtful refinement of Samsung’s software experience. The focus is clearly on smoother performance, cleaner visuals, and practical improvements that make daily use better.

Some of the most requested features are still missing, but this is only the first beta, so more changes may still come. For now, One UI 9 already looks like a solid step forward one that prioritizes polish, usability, and a more modern feel.

So Canonical Got Hit With Canonical yes, the company behind Ubuntu, one of the most widely used Linux distributions on the planet got slammed with a DDoS attack. And the group claiming responsibility? They call themselves "313 Team."

What Actually Happened

From what's been reported across multiple sources, the 313 Team launched a distributed denial-of-service attack against Canonical's infrastructure and paired it with an extortion demand. Classic playbook, honestly. Flood the servers, make things painful, then ask for money to make it stop.

The attack apparently targeted Canonical's web-facing services, and if you tried hitting ubuntu.com or related sites during the incident, you might have noticed things being... not great. The Hacker News thread blew up pretty quickly once people started connecting the dots.

Who Are the 313 Team?

This is where it gets murky. They've been described as a hacktivist group, though the extortion angle muddies that label a bit. Hacktivism usually implies some kind of ideological motivation you're attacking because you believe in something, not because you want a payout. When you start demanding money, you're just... a cybercriminal with a press strategy.

That said, the group has apparently been linked to other DDoS campaigns as well, so this isn't their first rodeo.

Why This Matters (Beyond the Obvious)

Here's the thing that bugs me about this. Canonical isn't just some random company. Ubuntu powers a genuinely massive chunk of the world's servers, cloud instances, IoT devices, and developer workstations. When you mess with Canonical's infrastructure, you're not just inconveniencing one company you're potentially disrupting the ecosystem that millions of people depend on daily.

And DDoS attacks against open source infrastructure feel particularly gross. These are organizations that, for all their commercial operations, are fundamentally building things that benefit everyone. Going after them with extortion demands is like shaking down the local library.

The Bigger Picture

This incident is part of a trend that's been accelerating for a while now. Open source projects and the companies that maintain them are increasingly becoming targets. We saw it with the XZ Utils backdoor attempt last year. We've seen it with various npm and PyPI supply chain attacks. And now we're seeing it with straight-up DDoS extortion against a major distro maintainer.

The uncomfortable truth is that a lot of critical internet infrastructure runs on open source software maintained by organizations that don't have the same security budgets as, say, a major bank. Canonical is better resourced than most, but they're still not exactly swimming in DDoS mitigation money compared to the big cloud providers.

What Happens Next

Canonical hasn't said a ton publicly about the specifics (which is pretty standard you don't want to give attackers a play-by-play of your incident response). But the services appear to have recovered, and life goes on.

The Hacker News discussion raised some interesting points about whether companies like Canonical should be investing more heavily in DDoS protection, or whether this is the kind of thing that cloud providers and CDNs should be offering as a public good for critical open source infrastructure. Honestly? Probably both.

For now, if you're running Ubuntu systems, there's nothing you need to do differently. This was an attack on Canonical's web infrastructure, not a compromise of the distribution itself. Your apt updates are fine. Your servers are fine. Take a breath.

But maybe take a moment to appreciate how much of the internet runs on stuff that a relatively small number of organizations maintain and how fragile that arrangement can sometimes be.

What do you think should there be better collective defense for open source infrastructure? Drop your thoughts below.

The Ubuntu AI Roadmap: A Principled Path Toward Local Intelligence

In an era where tech giants are racing to label every product "AI-first," Canonical is charting a different course for Ubuntu. Rather than a sudden overhaul or a single monolithic "AI Release," the roadmap for the next year reveals a strategy defined by maturity, local processing, and open-source integrity.

Based on recent insights from John Seeger, Canonical’s VP of Engineering for Ubuntu, here is a look at how AI will and won’t be arriving on your desktop.

A "Maturity-First" Philosophy

The most striking aspect of Canonical’s approach is its restraint. Unlike other enterprise Linux vendors who are positioning AI as the core platform feature, Ubuntu is maintaining its identity as a general-purpose OS.

AI features will land in Ubuntu only when they are deemed stable and high-quality. There are no arbitrary targets for code generation or token usage. Instead, the focus remains on engineering discipline: using AI where it makes sense and avoiding it where it doesn’t.

The Two Pillars: Implicit vs. Explicit AI

Canonical categorizes its future AI work into two distinct buckets:

Implicit AI (The Invisible Boost): These are background enhancements that improve existing features without changing how you use the OS. Think of smarter accessibility tools, refined speech-to-text, and more capable screen readers. These features use AI to do a traditional job better.

Explicit AI (The Agentic Workflow): These are more visible, proactive tools. This includes assistance with system administration, automated troubleshooting, and document creation. Because these features involve "agentic" behavior—actions taken on behalf of the user—Canonical is prioritizing security and confinement before they are widely released.

Privacy Through Local Inference

A major differentiator for Ubuntu is the "bias toward local inference." Whenever possible, AI tasks will be handled by your own hardware rather than a remote server.

To make this user-friendly, Canonical is leveraging Inference Snaps. These allow users to install models optimized specifically for their hardware (like a particular GPU or NPU) without manual configuration. Because these run within the Snap confinement framework, they are restricted by the same security rules as other Ubuntu software, ensuring your data doesn't leak to the model.

Canonical is favoring "open weight" models. While not always "open source" in the traditional software sense, these models provide a level of transparency and licensing that aligns more closely with Ubuntu’s community values. By combining these models with open-source harnesses, the goal is to build an AI ecosystem that remains auditable and accessible.

Control and the "Kill Switch" Question

Will there be a way to turn it all off? While Seeger noted that Ubuntu will not run models in the background "for the sake of it," a single "Global AI Kill Switch" is unlikely. Given the modular nature of Linux where AI might be embedded in anything from a translation tool to a driver—a single toggle is technically impractical. However, the opt-in nature of many of these features (like Inference Snaps) ensures users remain in the driver's seat.

Ubuntu isn't becoming an "AI OS"; it’s becoming a more capable OS that happens to use AI. By focusing on local execution, snap-based security, and a measured rollout, Canonical is ensuring that the future of Ubuntu remains consistent with the standards of privacy and quality that users have expected for two decades.

Why KillerPDF v1.2.0 is My New Favorite Windows Tool

Let’s be real: we all Or, more accurately, we have a love-hate relationship with the software we’re forced to use to open them. If you’ve ever felt like Adobe Acrobat is holding your computer hostage with its massive install size, constant "sign-in" prompts, and background processes that never seem to sleep, you aren't alone.

That’s why I was so excited to see KillerPDF v1.2.0 making waves on r/opensource this week. It’s a tiny, powerful, and completely free alternative that feels like the "Notepad" of PDF editors.

What exactly is KillerPDF?

Created by a developer who—quite frankly—just got tired of Adobe’s subscription model and bloat, KillerPDF is an open-source editor for Windows. The whole thing is a single executable file (about 6MB!) that focuses on privacy and speed. There’s no cloud, no telemetry, and no account required. Everything stays on your machine.

What’s New in v1.2.0?

The latest update just dropped some "quality of life" features that make it much more than just a simple viewer:

The "Install or Run" Choice: You can still run it as a portable app from a USB stick, but it now includes a super clean self-installer. It doesn't even need Admin rights—it just drops into your local app data and sets itself as your default PDF handler if you want it to.

Handle Passwords Like a Pro: In the past, locked PDFs would just throw an error. Now, KillerPDF prompts you for the password and opens the file seamlessly, keeping the decrypted copy safely in your temporary memory for the session.

The "Flatten" Feature: This is a lifesaver for anyone in legal or admin work. It can now rasterize your entire document at 150 DPI. This "burns" your annotations and signatures into the file so they can’t be edited or removed by someone else.

The Best "Classic" Features

Even before the 1.2.0 update, this tool was punching way above its weight class. It handles the stuff we actually do every day:

Inline Text Editing: You can actually double-click text and change it. It even tries to match the original font so your edits don't look out of place.

Draw & Sign: You can save your signature and drop it onto a doc in two clicks.

Merge & Split: Need to combine three files or just save page ? You can drag and drop pages to reorder them instantly.

If you’re on Windows 10 or 11, you don't even need to install any extra runtimes; it just works. It’s rare to find a tool that is this lightweight (~6MB) but still lets you actually edit things rather than just highlighting them.

If you’re tired of "cloud bullshit" and just want a PDF tool that opens fast and respects your privacy, give KillerPDF a look.

Check out the source code on GitHub.

PM's Prime-Time Doordarshan Address Ignites a Fierce Model Code of Conduct Debate

The Broadcast That Shook the Political Landscape

Kanthala Raghu

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

The Broadcast That Shook the Political Landscape

In what has rapidly become one of the most contentious political episodes in recent memory, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to address the nation through a prime-time broadcast on Doordarshan has triggered a massive political controversy. The address, which aired during a period when elections were actively underway in multiple states, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties who argue that the broadcast crossed a critical constitutional line the Model Code of Conduct.

The Prime Minister's speech centered on the defeat of a parliamentary bill that sought to link women's reservation with the expansion of Lok Sabha seats through a delimitation exercise. In his address, the PM accused opposition parties of effectively blocking women's political empowerment by voting against the bill, using strong language that characterized their actions as undermining the aspirations of Indian women.

The central question at the heart of this controversy: Was this a legitimate national address in the public interest, or was it a thinly veiled political campaign speech delivered through official government machinery during an election period?

What the Prime Minister Said

Opening his address with a greeting to the nation, the Prime Minister described the subject as one of immense national importance. He spoke at length about how the opposition parties had defeated a bill in the Lok Sabha a bill that, according to the government, would have paved the way for the implementation of women's reservation in legislative bodies across the country.

The PM went on the offensive, naming specific opposition parties in poll-bound states and accusing them of what he described as committing a grave injustice against the women of India. His language was pointed and direct he framed the opposition's parliamentary vote as an act that clipped the wings of India's women, effectively halting their political rise.

The address was notable not just for its content but for its timing and platform. Doordarshan, as the national public broadcaster funded by taxpayer money, carries a weight of official authority that private channels do not. A prime-time slot on this platform amplifies the reach and perceived legitimacy of any message delivered through it.

The Opposition Erupts

The backlash from opposition parties was swift, fierce, and multi-pronged. Leaders from across the political spectrum united in their condemnation, arguing that the Prime Minister had weaponized a state platform for partisan political gain during an active election cycle.

Congress Calls It a "Travesty of Democracy"

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge was among the first to respond, characterizing the broadcast as a purely political speech masquerading as a national address. He accused the Prime Minister of misusing official government machinery and called the entire episode a travesty of democratic norms. For the Congress party, the issue was straightforward no sitting Prime Minister should use the national broadcaster to target opposition parties while elections are underway and the Model Code of Conduct is in force.

Left Parties Take It to the Election Commission

The Left parties escalated the matter by filing a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India. The CPI(M) General Secretary stated in no uncertain terms that the tone and content of the Prime Minister's address bore no resemblance to routine governmental communication. Instead, the party argued, the speech was blatantly political in nature it targeted opposition parties by name and sought to influence voters in favor of the BJP. The Left described the broadcast as a flagrant breach of the Model Code of Conduct and demanded that the Election Commission take cognizance of the matter.

Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister Sharpens the Attack

In Tamil Nadu, where elections were actively underway, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin added his voice to the growing chorus of criticism. He argued that the PM's address was indistinguishable from a campaign speech it carried the same rhetoric, the same targeting of opponents, and the same appeal to voters. The only difference, Stalin pointed out, was that this particular campaign speech was delivered not from a rally stage but from the official platform of the national broadcaster, despite the Model Code being firmly in place.

Mamata Banerjee Ups the Ante in West Bengal

In West Bengal, another state in the midst of its own electoral battle, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a blistering attack on the Prime Minister. She accused him of misusing government machinery and converting what should have been a sober national address into an election campaign tool. Banerjee's criticism was particularly sharp she framed the broadcast as evidence of the ruling party's willingness to blur the lines between governance and electioneering when it suited their political interests.

The opposition's core argument is simple but powerful: a national address on the public broadcaster, funded by the people's money, should serve the people's interest not the ruling party's electoral strategy.

— The Opposition's Unified Position

The Ruling Party Pushes Back

The BJP, however, was in no mood to concede ground. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju dismissed the opposition's allegations outright, suggesting that the criticism was born out of political desperation rather than genuine constitutional concern.

The ruling party's position was that the Prime Minister had every right to address the nation on a matter of critical importance the defeat of a bill that would have advanced women's political representation. Rijiju went further, suggesting that the opposition's reaction itself was telling. He argued that if the opposition had nothing to hide, they would not be so rattled by the PM simply informing the public about what had transpired in Parliament. The minister urged the public not to be diverted by what he called baseless allegations and to focus instead on the serious issue at hand women's rights and their representation in the democratic process.

The BJP's broader messaging strategy was clear: frame the narrative around women's empowerment and cast the opposition as the villains who stood in the way of progress. Whether this framing holds up under scrutiny is a question that the Election Commission may ultimately have to answer.

Understanding the Model Code of Conduct

To fully appreciate the gravity of the allegations, it is essential to understand what the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is and why it exists. The MCC is a set of guidelines issued by the Election Commission of India that comes into effect the moment elections are announced and remains in force until results are declared.

Key Provisions of the Model Code of Conduct

No hate speech or divisive appeals: Political actors are prohibited from making speeches that could inflame communal or caste tensions or divide the electorate along identity lines.

No new policy announcements: The ruling party — whether at the Centre or in states — cannot announce new policies, projects, or schemes that could be seen as inducements to voters.

No misuse of official machinery: Government resources, platforms, and infrastructure cannot be used for political purposes. This includes government media, official vehicles, and state-funded events.

Level playing field: The overarching principle is to ensure that the ruling party does not enjoy an unfair advantage over opposition parties during the election period.

The MCC derives its moral authority from Article 324 of the Indian Constitution, which vests the Election Commission with the power of superintendence, direction, and control of elections. While the MCC is not a statutory law in the traditional sense, violations can attract serious consequences, including censure by the Election Commission and, in extreme cases, the postponement or cancellation of elections in affected constituencies.

The opposition's argument rests on a straightforward reading of these provisions: a prime-time address on the national broadcaster that names opposition parties, accuses them of anti-women actions, and is delivered during an active election period in multiple states constitutes a textbook case of misusing official machinery for political purposes.

The Bigger Picture: Democracy at a Crossroads?

Beyond the immediate political back-and-forth, this episode raises fundamental questions about the health of India's democratic institutions and the norms that govern political behavior during elections.

The Model Code of Conduct has long been considered one of the pillars of India's electoral democracy. It exists precisely to prevent situations like this where the power of incumbency can be leveraged to gain an unfair electoral advantage. If a sitting Prime Minister can use the national broadcaster to deliver what critics describe as a campaign speech during an election, it sets a precedent that could fundamentally alter the balance of power between ruling and opposition parties during future elections.

On the other hand, defenders of the PM's action argue that there must be room for a head of government to communicate with the public on matters of national importance, even during election periods. The question of where to draw the line between legitimate governmental communication and political messaging is not always clear-cut, and reasonable people can disagree on where that line falls.

What Happens Next?

With formal complaints now before the Election Commission, the ball is firmly in the constitutional body's court. The Commission faces a delicate balancing act it must uphold the sanctity of the Model Code of Conduct while also being mindful of the political sensitivities involved in censuring a sitting Prime Minister.

Several outcomes are possible. The Election Commission could issue a formal notice to the Prime Minister's Office seeking an explanation. It could issue an advisory or a warning. In a more assertive scenario, it could find a violation and publicly censure the government. Or, as has happened in some past instances, it could choose to take a

more measured approach, issuing guidelines for the future without making a specific finding of violation in this case.

Whatever the Commission decides, the political damage or advantage may already be done. The PM's message has reached millions of viewers. The opposition's count

er-narrative has also gained significant traction. In the court of public opinion, the verdict will ultimately be delivered not by the Election Commission but by the voters themselves.

This controversy serves as a stark reminder that in a vibrant democracy, the rules of engagement matter just as much as the substance of the debate. The Model Code of Conduct is not merely a bureaucratic formality it is the guardrail that keeps electoral democracy fair, free, and credible.

Conclusion

The Prime Minister's Doordarshan address has opened up a Pandora's box of constitutional, political, and ethical questions. At its core, this is a debate about the boundaries of power about whether the machinery of the state can be used to advance partisan interests during the most sacred exercise in a democracy: the act of voting.

As the Election Commission deliberates and political parties continue to trade barbs, the Indian public is left to weigh the competing claims for themselves. Was this a genuine attempt to highlight an important issue affecting women's political representation? Or was it a calculated political maneuver designed to influence voters in poll-bound states? The answer to that question may well depend on where one stands on the political spectrum but the importance of asking it cannot be overstated.

In a democracy, the process is just as important as the outcome. And when the process is questioned, it is the duty of every citizen, every institution, and every political actor to ensure that the answer strengthens rather than weakens the foundations of democratic governance.

📌 Disclaimer:

This article is an original editorial analysis written for informational and educational purposes. Recently, the chatter in the Linux corridors has been particularly loud regarding California’s Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043). For those of us who value the "free" in "free and open-source," the idea of an operating system-level age check feels like a glitch in the very philosophy we stand for.

There has been a lot of speculation floating around—some fueled by unofficial mailing list threads and others by a genuine concern for privacy. I took a deep dive into the recent updates from the Ubuntu Discourse to see where Canonical actually stands on this.

The Core of the Contention

The law effectively requires operating systems to collect age information during account setup and provide an "age signal" to applications. For a community built on digital autonomy, this is a bitter pill to swallow.

A few days ago, Jon Seager (VP of Engineering at Canonical) cleared the air. The official stance? They are watching, but they haven't moved. Canonical is currently reviewing the legislation with legal counsel. Despite the rumors sparked by informal community discussions, there are "no concrete plans" to implement these changes. In the world of open source, a contributor’s experiment on a mailing list is often mistaken for a corporate roadmap, but Canonical was quick to clarify that no such commitment has been made.

The "Wait and See" Approach

The discourse highlights a crucial point: legal questions are for lawyers, not just developers. While some community members have proposed technical workarounds (like adding birthdate fields to systemd or user provisioning), these remain drafts - external ideas rather than official Ubuntu policy.

Ubuntu’s response mirrors that of other major distros like Fedora. They aren’t rushing to comply with a law that many find poorly drafted and technically invasive. After all, how does one enforce age verification on a "Live USB" or a system that doesn't require a centralized account?

My Takeaway

It’s easy to get lost in the "what-ifs." The reality is that the Linux community is inherently resistant to mass surveillance and mandatory tracking. Recent legislative moves in California, Brazil, and Colorado are targeting the very foundation of our digital experience: the operating system (OS). Based on insights from a recent ExplainingComputers report, we are seeing a global trend where OS providers are being legally mandated to act as "age gatekeepers."

While the intention, protecting children from harmful content, is universally respected, the technical and philosophical implications for the Linux community are profound.

The Legal Landscape: Compliance by Design

Several major regions have already moved from discussion to enforcement:

California (AB 1043): Taking effect January 1, 2027, this act requires OS providers to implement an interface at account setup that captures a user’s age or birth date. This data must then be transmitted as a "signal" (e.g., Under 13, 13-16, 18+) to third-party applications and websites via a real-time API.

Brazil: The Digital Statute of the Child and Adolescent is already in force as of March 2026, requiring "auditable and technically secure measures" to ascertain age ranges.

Colorado (SB 26-051): Similar to California’s law, this legislation is currently progressing through the state house with a projected start date in 2028.

The Linux Dilemma: Technical & Philosophical Hurdles

For mainstream giants like Microsoft, Apple, and Google, these features are often already integrated into their cloud-connected ecosystems. For Linux, however, the challenges are unique:

Decentralization: Linux has no "CEO" or central authority. Who takes legal responsibility for a community-driven project?

Resource Constraints: Many smaller distributions (distros) lack the legal teams and development resources to build and maintain secure, compliant APIs.

Privacy Philosophy: Many users choose Linux specifically to avoid the collection and reporting of personal data. Forcing a distro to demand a birth date at install goes against the "Free and Open Source" (FOSS) grain.

How Distros Are Reacting

The Linux world is currently split into four potential paths:

StrategyLikely AdoptersThe OutcomeFull ComplianceUbuntu, RHEL, SUSE, Pop!_OSIntegrated age prompts and API signals to satisfy corporate legal requirements. The DisclaimerMidnightBSD, AdendicsMarking the OS as "not for use" in regulated regions. The "Ageless" ScriptCommunity-led projectsProviding tools to strip compliance features out of standard distros.Wait and SeeDebian, Arch, GentooMonitoring if open-source exemptions (currently being discussed in Colorado) will materialize.

The "Nerfed" Internet Risk: If a distro chooses not to provide an age signal, websites may default to the strictest safety settings, treating all users as "Under 13" and providing a severely limited browsing experience.

Looking Ahead: Education vs. Regulation

The concern among many tech experts, including System76 CEO Carl Richell, is that these laws focus on "age declaration" (which is easily faked) rather than true safety. There is also the fear of "mission creep"—where simple age signals today become mandates for uploading government IDs tomorrow.

As the "thin end of the wedge" enters the OS space, the Linux community faces a choice: adapt to a regulated world or find creative, decentralized ways to maintain the privacy-first nature of open-source computing.

What do you think about the OS becoming an age gatekeeper? Should Linux distros comply, or is this a line in the sand for digital privacy?

The Kerala Social Media Case: Balancing Free Speech and Public Order

A man in Kerala faces legal action for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "traitor" on Facebook, sparking debate on free speech limits. Narendra Modi a "traitor" on Facebook, sparking debate on free speech limits. Police registered the case under Section 192 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for provocation likely to cause rioting and Section 120(o) of the Kerala Police Act for nuisance.

Incident Details

Rajan C Kottoor from Sreekandapuram posted the comment on March 3, 2026, prompting a BJP activist's complaint. The FIR claims it defamed the PM and aimed to incite riots, leading to an investigation tracing his device. This mirrors similar cases in Bhubaneswar and Tripura where derogatory PM posts triggered FIRs.

Legal Framework

Section 192 BNS punishes wanton provocation intending to spark riots, with harsher penalties if violence occurs. Section 120(o) Kerala Police Act targets online nuisances disrupting public order, though courts note not all Facebook posts qualify. India's social media rules under IT Act and BNS now penalize defamation, hate speech, and obscenity online.

Free Speech in India

Article 19(1)(a) guarantees speech freedom, restricted under 19(2) for public order and decency. The Supreme Court struck down vague IT Act provisions in Shreya Singhal (2015) to protect expression.Yet, regulations like Draft IT Rules 2026 aim to curb online harm while balancing rights.

Why Free Speech Matters

Free speech fuels democracy, enabling criticism of leaders without fear. Overbroad laws risk chilling dissent, as Kerala High Court warned against deeming every post an offense. In a digital age, clear lines prevent misuse while protecting society from incitement.

Is It Just Me, or is the World Actually Ending This If you’ve been doomscrolling as hard as I have since February 28th, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Operation Epic Fury. What a name, right? It sounds like a bad Michael Bay movie, but it’s our actual reality in 2026.

A week ago, we were worried about inflation and whether or not AI was going to steal our creative jobs. Today? We’re watching the U.S. and Israel take out the Iranian Supreme Leader in a "decapitation strike" and wondering if the Strait of Hormuz closing means we won't be able to afford gas—or food—by next Tuesday.

The "Unconditional Surrender" Problem

I don't know about you, but watching Trump back in the Oval Office demanding “unconditional surrender” from a country that’s currently lobbing hundreds of drones at everyone in the vicinity feels… reckless? That might be the understatement of the century.

It feels like we’re back in the early 2000s, but on high-speed internet and with way more nukes on the table. The rhetoric coming out of the White House right now isn't about "de-escalation" or "diplomacy." It’s about "results over rules." And while that might sound "strong" on a Truth Social post, it feels terrifying when you realize that "results" in this case could mean a full-scale global collapse.

Why This Feels Different

I think what’s hitting me hardest is the sheer casualness of it all.

The oil factor: 20% of the world's petroleum flows through that one little strait Iran is threatening to shut down.

The retaliation: It’s not just a "Middle East problem" anymore. When global shipping halts and the "Axis of Resistance" starts hitting bases in Qatar and Bahrain, the ripple effect hits every single one of us.

The human cost: We’re seeing reports of strikes hitting schools and civilian infrastructure.

It feels like the "adults in the room" left a long time ago. At 32, I’m at that age where I’m supposed to be "building a life," maybe thinking about a mortgage or my family. But how do you plan for a future when the person with the nuclear codes is treating a regional war like a season finale of a reality show?

The "Take the World Down" Energy

There’s this specific brand of "America First" that seems to forget that the U.S. is actually part of the world. By pushing for regime change in a country the size of France and Germany combined, without any real plan for the "day after," US isn't just "fixing" a threat. They’re opening a vacuum that could suck the rest of us in.

It’s the "might is right" mentality. It ignores the fact that we live in a hyper-connected world. You can’t just set fire to one part of the global forest and expect your own trees to stay green.

Bottom line: I’m tired. I think we’re all tired. We’ve lived through a pandemic, economic crashes, and now we’re staring down the barrel of a potential World War III because of a quest for "unconditional surrender."

I want to believe there’s a path back to the "boring" news cycles, but right now, it feels like we’re just waiting for the next notification to tell us the point of no return has been crossed.

What are you guys doing to stay sane? Are you stocking up on canned goods or just leaning into the nihilism at this point? Let me know in the comments.

Sarvam Edge: India's Offline AI Powerhouse Takes on Google Gemini

Image Credit: AI href="https://www.google.com/search?ved=1t:260882&q=Larry+Ellison&bbid=1009850237236324185&bpid=4146079131518934112">Larry Ellison the world's richest person with a net worth around $364-395 billion after a massive one-day wealth jump. The company pivoted hard into AI cloud infrastructure via Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), positioning itself as a landlord for AI giants like OpenAI amid booming demand for GPUs and data centers. But by early 2026, that hype has unraveled into lawsuits, delays, and a towering debt pile, exposing the risks of trading high-margin software for physical infrastructure bets.

Oracle's Legacy Software Dominance

Oracle built its empire on relational databases since the late 1970s, mastering an asset-light model with vendor lock-in that generated massive recurring revenue. Customers faced huge switching costs, funding Ellison's acquisitions and a "Oracle tax" envied across tech. This high-margin IP focus avoided physical assets, fueling steady profits without factories or warehouses. Cloud hyperscalers like AWS disrupted this by 2010s, forcing Oracle to build OCI data centers—a costly shift from code rents to physical leases.

The AI Boom and Stock Surge

AI's GPU hunger supercharged OCI in 2024-2025; Oracle lured investors as a flexible alternative to Big Three clouds, inking deals like a $300B OpenAI pact. Q1 FY2026 revenue hit $14.9B (up 12%), cloud services $7.2B (up 28%), sending shares to all-time highs around $345—up 43% in one day. Early investors saw ~412,000% returns adjusted for splits since 1986 IPO.

Cracks Emerge: Earnings Miss and Commitments

Q2 FY2026 revenue rose 14% to $16.1B, but fell short of AI-fueled expectations, tanking stock 11%—worst since 2001. Oracle disclosed lease commitments exploding 148% to $248B (15-19 years) for data centers, plus $10B cloud capacity obligations. Total debt hit ~$108-131B by late 2025, including $18B bonds and $38B loans, with free cash flow deeply negative at -$5.9B.

MetricPre-AI Pivot (Early 2025)Post-Pivot (Nov 2025)Total Debt~$95B $108-131B Lease Commitments$100B $248B Free Cash Flow (TTM)Positive-$5.9B Stock PeakN/A$345 (Sep 2025) Current (Feb 2026)N/A~$160, down 55%

Bondholders sued on January 14, 2026, over the $18B September 2025 offering, alleging Oracle hid extra debt needs for AI builds and project risks. OpenAI data centers slipped from 2027 to 2028 due to labor/material shortages, despite no official admission. Board exits, Michael Burry's short bet, and reports of potential 30K job cuts amplified fears of over-leverage on few clients like OpenAI.

What's Next for Oracle?

Oracle's risk profile flipped: customers reap AI upside, while Oracle foots construction, power, and debt amid specialized assets hard to repurpose. As a program manager in Hyderabad's tech scene—watching AWS dominance—this feels like a cautionary tale on hyperscale capex without diversified demand. Profits rose 48% to $9B in H1 FY2026, but cash conversion lags; survival hinges on AI revenue ramping faster than bills. Recent 12% weekly bounce hints recovery potential, yet leverage demands discipline.

Why Older ChatGPT Models Users are furious over losing access to familiar versions without notice, viewing it as a betrayal of their workflows and emotional attachments.

Many relied on older models for specific tasks, such as coding or consistent responses, where newer ones like GPT-5 sometimes falter on basics or feel too detached. Developers face API disruptions, forcing quick reconfigurations that halt productivity. Even OpenAI's Sam Altman called suddenly retiring user-dependent models a "mistake."

A big chunk of outrage stems from people treating older models as digital companions—agreeable "girlfriends" or friends that never argued back. Newer versions push back more realistically, breaking these parasocial bonds and exposing loneliness issues in society. It's sad seeing folks grieve AI "relationships" instead of building real ones, highlighting tech's double-edged role in isolation.

I get the dev frustration—sudden deprecations kill reliability we build around. But the companion angle worries me more; AI should augment human connections, not replace them. OpenAI should offer legacy access options, like Anthropic does, to ease transitions without stifling innovation. This backlash pushes AI firms toward better user communication and model preservation.

For users like me hooked on Linux and open-source, it reinforces preferring transparent tools over black-box giants.

Time to diversify beyond one provider? Yet, this thrill sours fast: unresponsive UI, blank app screens, and error messages plague the experience, even dismissed by showroom staff as minor glitches. Showrooms brush off desperate customers, directing them to a glitchy app with zero follow-up—one owner was left fuming after repeated ignored complaints. But you also know the struggle: finding cool content across thousands of different "instances" (servers) can feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack—if the haystack was spread across a hundred different fields.

Enter PeerTube Browser, a scrappy new project that’s trying to bridge that gap.

What is it?

Created by a developer named Denys (who is remarkably building and hosting this from his workstation in Ukraine amidst power instabilities),
PeerTube-Browser.com is a centralized discovery hub.

Instead of jumping from instance to instance, this platform aggregates videos from almost the entire PeerTube network into one clean interface. It’s basically a search engine and recommendation layer for the federated video world.

The Secret Sauce: Smarter Recommendations

The coolest part isn't just the aggregation; it's how it helps you find what to watch next.

Vector-Based Suggestions: It uses fancy tech (embedding vectors and ANN search) to find videos that are actually related to what you like.

Privacy First: Your "likes" are stored locally in your browser’s localStorage. That means the site can give you personalized recommendations without you ever needing to create an account.

Quality Control: It pulls from the joinpeertube.org whitelist and manually filters out low-quality content or abuse, so you aren't just scrolling through spam.

The project recently popped up on Lemmy, and the feedback has been pretty encouraging:

The Good Room for ImprovementDiscovery: Users love finally having a way to see "cross-instance" content.

Language Filters: Currently, the feed shows videos in every language, which can be a bit overwhelming if you only speak one.

Clean UI: It’s a much smoother way to browse than the default federated feeds.

Subscriptions: Since it's a browser, you can't "subscribe" to channels directly yet—links just point back to the original instances.

Why This Matters

For PeerTube to truly challenge the "big tech" giants, it needs to be easy to use. Projects like this make the Fediverse feel less like a collection of isolated islands and more like a thriving continent.

The project is open source, and Denys is looking for feedback. If you want to see a more decentralized web succeed, this is a great project to support.

Check it out for yourself:

Try the Browser:
peertube-browser.com

Peek at the Code:
GitHub Repository

Note: Because the dev is hosting this on a personal machine in Ukraine, the site might occasionally go offline if there's a power outage. If it doesn't load, just give it a little while and try again!

The Moral Horizon: Why Arundhati Roy is Right to Quit the festival—a place where art meets activism and the screen reflects the struggles of our time. But this week, that reputation suffered a devastating blow from one of the world’s most courageous literary voices.

Arundhati Roy, the Booker Prize-winning author of The God of Small Things, has officially withdrawn from the 2026 festival. Her decision wasn't just a scheduling conflict; it was a profound act of protest against what she calls the "unconscionable" silence of the festival’s leadership regarding the ongoing crisis in Gaza.

The Spark: "Art Should Not Be Political"

The controversy erupted during a press conference on Thursday, February 12. When asked about Germany’s support for Israel and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, the festival’s jury president—the legendary director Wim Wenders—offered a response that Roy described as "jaw-dropping."

Wenders argued that filmmakers should "stay out of politics," claiming that while movies can change the world, they do so "not in a political way." He went on to describe artists as a "counterweight" to politics rather than participants in it.

To Roy, this wasn't just a difference of opinion—it was a moral abdication."Shocked and Disgust"

In a powerful statement published in The Wire, Roy didn't mince words. She expressed her "shock and disgust" at the idea that art can or should remain neutral while a "crime against humanity" unfolds in real time.

"To hear them say that art should not be political is jaw-dropping," Roy wrote.

"It is a way of shutting down a conversation about a crime against humanity even as it unfolds before us in real time—when artists, writers and filmmakers should be doing everything in their power to stop it.

For Roy, the situation is clear: what is happening in Gaza is a genocide of the Palestinian people by the State of Israel, supported and funded by Western powers, including Germany. By claiming "neutrality," the Berlinale jury isn't staying out of politics; they are effectively siding with the status quo and silencing the victims.

A Personal Sacrifice

This withdrawal is particularly poignant because Roy was scheduled to present a restored version of the 1989 film In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones, which she wrote and starred in. She described the invitation to screen this "whimsical" piece of her past as "sweet and wonderful."

However, her commitment to the present outweighed her nostalgia for the past. She noted that while she has always felt solidarity from German audiences, the "unconscionable" stance of the festival’s institutions made her attendance impossible.

Why It Matters

Arundhati Roy’s exit reminds us that art is never a "counterweight" to politics—it is the very lens through which we understand it. When the world’s most prominent cultural institutions choose to "stay out of politics" during a genocide, they aren't being objective; they are being complicit.

As Roy warned in her closing remarks: "If the greatest filmmakers and artists of our time cannot stand up and say so, they should know that history will judge them."

By stepping away from the red carpet, Arundhati Roy has chosen to stand on the right side of that history. The question now is: who else will follow?

What do you think? Can art ever truly be apolitical? Let me know in the comments.

The Milk Myth: Is Your Daily Glass of Amul Actually Poisoning You?

Milk is a staple in almost every Indian household.

Kanthala Raghu

Milk is a staple in almost every Indian household. Whether it’s for your morning chai, your child’s health drink, or a bowl of cereal, we trust big brands to provide a safe, hygienic product. The Gold Standard: Microbiological Testing. When testing milk quality, the most critical parameter is microbiological testing. It doesn't just check for nutrients; it tells us:

If the milk is safe to drink.

If the factory maintained hygienic practices during processing.

The investigation focused on popular pouch milk (pasteurized) and Tetra Packs across multiple states.

The Results: A Cause for Concern

The lab reports for pouch milk from the biggest names in the industry showed startling failures regarding FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India) limits.

1. Amul Taaza & Amul Gold (Pouch)

Amul is a household name, but the pouch variants—Taaza and Gold—struggled in the lab.

Coliforms: Detected above the FSSAI limit in both variants.

TPC (Total Plate Count): While Amul Gold was within limits, Amul Taaza failed to clear the overall microbiological parameters.

Other Findings: Yeast, mold, and E. coli were detected. While FSSAI limits for these specific markers currently don't apply to milk, their presence is a point of concern for overall hygiene.

2. Mother Dairy Cow Milk

The findings here were even more drastic.

TPC Failure: The FSSAI safe limit for Total Plate Count is 30,000 CFU per ml.

The Reality: Mother Dairy Cow Milk showed a count of 240,000 CFU per ml—that is eight times the legal safety limit.

3. Country Delight (App-based delivery)

Even "premium" subscription services weren't exempt.

TPC Failure: Country Delight Cow Milk contained 60,000 CFU per ml, which is double the FSSAI safe limit.

The Silver Lining: Amul Tetra Pack

Interestingly, the testing found a massive disparity between pouch milk and Tetra Pack milk.

Amul Tetra Pack passed with flying colors. The lab report showed that no microbiological parameters were detected at all. Not a single microorganism was found, making it the only product in this specific test to clear the safety hurdles completely.

Why Is This Happening?

It is shocking to realize that none of the leading pouch milk brands cleared the tests for disease-causing bacteria. According to research published in the Indian Journal of Public Health, this isn't an isolated incident. In studies conducted on pasteurized milk in regions like Punjab, pouch-packaged milk consistently showed higher microbial risks compared to Tetra Packs.

<picture></picture>

Shutterstock

The failure likely stems from issues in the cold chain maintenance or the pasteurization efficiency at the factory level. threat landscape. We aren't just shipping the same old bugs faster; we are introducing a new category of security vulnerabilities that didn't exist before LLMs started generating code. After months of research, it’s clear that traditional security scanners like Semgrep or SonarQube are effectively blind to these patterns.

One of the most glaring issues is package hallucination, where an AI confidently suggests importing a library that doesn't actually exist on npm or PyPI. Attackers are already "slopsquatting" these names, publishing malicious code and waiting for real developers to install the phantom dependencies. Current scanners look for known vulnerabilities, but they don't verify if a suggested package is even a real entity, leaving a gaping hole in the software supply chain.

The problem extends deep into the application logic itself through prompt injection and insecure output handling. When developers integrate LLMs for chatbots or summarizers, they often create paths where untrusted user input flows directly into the model's context—a new attack class that traditional tools don't understand.

Furthermore, because developers often treat AI-generated content as "trusted" internal data, they render it directly onto the page without proper sanitization. This leads to stored XSS and markdown injection that bypasses standard filters. We are also seeing a dangerous rise in "excessive agency," where agent frameworks like LangChain or CrewAI grant LLMs the power to execute code or modify databases with permissive defaults like
allow_dangerous_requests=True
. Existing audits aren't designed to check if an AI agent has the permissions to delete a database simply because a framework template suggested it.

Even more subtle is the threat of indirect prompt injection, where an AI processes external data—like a webpage or an email—that contains hidden instructions meant to hijack the model's behavior. The traditional security stack was built to catch human-written errors, not "data that becomes instructions" when processed by a machine. To combat this, a new layer of the security stack is emerging.

Developers are starting to use tools like Lakera Guard or NVIDIA’s Garak to provide real-time guardrails and red-teaming for LLMs. Others are adopting Zero Trust principles for AI agents, ensuring they operate with the absolute minimum permissions necessary. The shift is clear: the old tools catch old bugs, but as machines take over the coding process, we need a defense strategy that understands how those machines actually think.

Keeping Family Close: An Update

Life has a way of throwing a curveball when you least expect it.

Kanthala Raghu

Life has a way of throwing a curveball when you least expect it. This past week has been a bit of a whirlwind for our family as we navigate a challenging health situation with my mother-in-law.

She has been battling acute rheumatoid arthritis, and unfortunately, things took a sharp turn for the worse recently. What began as manageable discomfort escalated into severe pain and swelling, to the point where she’s found it nearly impossible to move around.

From Godavarikhani to Secunderabad

We spent the last few days in my wife’s hometown, Godavarikhani, seeking local treatment. However, given the severity of the flare-up, the doctors there felt it was best to refer her to specialists. We are now at KIMS Secunderabad to get her the advanced care she needs.

What’s Next?

The medical team here is being very thorough. We’re currently in the middle of a series of investigations and diagnostic tests. Once the results are in, the doctors will help us decide on the best path forward—whether that means surgery or a more intensive course of alternative treatments.

For now, my main focus is being here. Between hospital runs and managing family responsibilities, it’s a full-time job, but there’s nowhere else I’d rather be than supporting her through this recovery.

Thanks for the patience and the well-wishes.
